Black Doctors in Los Angeles County
Growing up, I was lucky enough to have a Black pediatrician, and when I reached adulthood and couldn’t find a Black physician, I didn’t think too much of it. It wasn’t until I started my Masters degree in Public Health a few years back that I realized how detrimental it is to Black people in America to deal with physicians who aren’t Black. When you sift through the data and see that no matter a patient’s education, wealth or socioeconomic status, Black people face poorer health outcomes, you can’t help but wonder how much our lived experience here in America is blame.
There is a growing body of research that connects racism to a number of health disparities in the Black community. One thing that stands out is that provider bias accounts for a significant portion of incompetent care. I can attest to this from my experience with the OB/GYN who provided maternal care and delivered my son. In short, I was rushed, ignored, and induced into early labor. Having now switched to an OB/GYN who is Black, I know for certain that my gut feelings about my experience were spot on.
In my search for Black practitioners for the whole family, I started making a list of the names so I could reference them later on, especially if my insurance were to change and I wouldn’t be covered under my current physician. I figured I couldn’t be the only one looking for this information, so I compiled the list below.
